Drupal 7 is the main back-end to the current version of DKAN. It provides a wealth of features and optional modules that the UK Data Service already makes use of on our own instance. However Drupal 7 is not the latest version of Drupal itself and we were therefore quite pleased to hear that the DKAN team has begun working on a version of DKAN for Drupal 8.
It is still early days for this project. A demo version has popped up but this version 8 port is still early on in its development. What this means though is that hopefully in the future we will be able to move over to this version 8 based system and take advantage of Drupal 8’s increased security, speed and core module options that are pre-installed. There is also the fact it now supports PHP 5.6 and PHP7 right out of the box, which means there is a lot more possibilities for further modules going forward.
The current demo version makes use of the Interra catalog front-end. This front end design is a lot more search focused than the original DKAN theming and is more along the lines of our own customised theming we have added to our own instance of the Drupal 7 version.
If you are interested in taking a look at their demo version you can see it here: http://d8.dkandemo.nuamsdev.com/
We will be keeping a close eye on the development of this new version and hopefully we will be able to make use of its numerous benefits sometime in the near future.
